Chilapa de Álvarez sits in the mountains of central Guerrero, well above the hot Pacific coast. From above, the town is a tight cluster of blocks set into a basin. Roads climb out of it in several directions, following the ridges and valleys instead of running straight. Around the edges, the contour lines press close, and the built-up area thins into scattered houses and fields.
At the centre is the main square and the large cathedral, and most of the street grid lines up with them.
