Te mapa
Chino lies in Nagano Prefecture, where the long slopes of the Yatsugatake mountains run down towards the Suwa basin. The city covers a wide sweep of land, from the valley floor up into forested highland. On the map, the built-up area is concentrated near the lowland. Roads and farmland reach up the incline in long parallel strips.
The area has been inhabited since the Jōmon period. Two celebrated clay figurines, the Jōmon Venus and the Masked Goddess, were excavated in Chino and are designated National Treasures. Part of the Suwa Taisha shrine complex stands within the city. The shrine's Onbashira festival, held every six years, draws large crowds.
A Chino map poster captures a landscape tilted towards the mountains. Streets cluster around the rail line and river in the basin, then give way to terraced fields and forest roads that climb eastward. The result is a map with a strong sense of direction, from dense lowland to open upland.
Long, gently rising land stretches up towards the volcanic range. Roads and field boundaries run with the slope in steady parallel lines.
The main town area sits on flatter ground near the river and railway. Its denser street pattern is concentrated at the foot of the hills.
The grounds of the Suwa Taisha shrine form a quiet wooded space within the city. It is a small, deliberate shape among the streets.

Koteā ko Chino
Chino draws people to its mountain air, its ancient past and its shrine festival. A poster of the city keeps that setting in view, a town gathered at the foot of a long volcanic slope.
