Kofu Map Poster & Print

Kofu is the capital of Yamanashi Prefecture and occupies the flat floor of the Kofu Basin, surrounded on every side by mountains. From above, the city is a dense pattern of streets that stops sharply where the slopes begin, a clear line between basin and highland.

In the sixteenth century this was the base of the warlord Takeda Shingen, and his former residence is now the site of Takeda Shrine north of the station. The stone walls of Kofu Castle, now Maizuru Castle Park, still stand close to the centre.

A Kofu map poster shows how the old castle town grid gives way to newer suburbs spreading across the basin. The region is known for its grapes, peaches and wine, and for gem cutting and jewellery, crafts that have long been part of local industry.

01

Maizuru Castle Park

The castle grounds sit right beside the main station, their compact outline visible within the central streets as a reminder of Kofu's origins as a castle town.

02

The Takeda axis

A straight avenue runs north from the station toward Takeda Shrine, linking the modern centre with the site of the old Takeda residence at the foot of the hills.

03

Basin edges

Streets thin out and stop where the mountains rise, so the city takes the shape of the basin floor itself, with rivers flowing down from the surrounding slopes.
