Colmenar Viejo lies in the Community of Madrid, north of the capital, on high ground below the Sierra de Guadarrama. Its surroundings are open dehesa and pasture, much of it within protected areas, and on a clear day the mountains fill the northern horizon. The map shows a compact town in wide, open country.
The historic centre is gathered around the Basílica de la Asunción, a large Gothic and Renaissance church whose tower is visible from far away. The old streets are irregular and close together, while newer neighbourhoods spread outward in more regular blocks, bounded by main roads and the motorway toward Madrid.
