Consett Map Poster & Print
Consett sits on high ground in north-west County Durham, above the valley of the River Derwent. On the map, the town is a spread of terraced streets and later housing estates, with large open areas where the steelworks once stood. The surrounding land rises toward the Pennine moors to the west and falls toward the valley to the north and east.
For more than a century Consett was defined by its ironworks and steelworks, which closed in 1980. The site has since been cleared and partly redeveloped, and old railway lines have become walking and cycling paths, including sections of the long-distance Coast to Coast route. The Derwent Reservoir lies a short distance to the west.

To the north and east the land drops into the Derwent valley, and the edge of the town follows that slope with a clear change in density.
