Te mapa
Cotonou sits on a narrow strip of land between the Gulf of Guinea and Lake Nokoué, Benin's largest lagoon. A channel known as the Cotonou lagoon connects the lake to the sea and divides the city in two, with bridges joining the halves. The Atlantic beach runs straight along the southern edge, and the port stands at the waterfront.
Porto-Novo is the official capital of Benin, but Cotonou is its largest city and its economic centre, where most government institutions work. The Dantokpa market, one of the largest open-air markets in West Africa, sits beside the lagoon. On Lake Nokoué to the north, the stilt village of Ganvié is built entirely over water.
A Cotonou map poster is built on three horizontal bands: ocean, city and lake, with the lagoon channel cutting vertically between them. The streets fill every piece of dry land in a dense, irregular pattern. It is one of the most striking water-bound layouts in West Africa.
The channel between Lake Nokoué and the sea splits Cotonou into two parts, crossed by bridges, and gives the city its most recognisable feature on the map.
A long, straight beach forms the city's southern edge, with the port and its breakwaters breaking the line near the centre.
The broad lagoon spreads north of the city, and its wide open water fills the top of the frame in contrast to the dense streets below.
