Coulsdon lies in the London Borough of Croydon, on the southern edge of Greater London, where the city meets the North Downs. The town sits in a dry chalk valley, and the land rises on either side towards open downland, including Farthing Downs, a protected stretch of grassland to the south-west.
From above, the valley is the key feature. The Brighton Road and railway lines follow its floor, and residential streets climb the slopes in curving terraces and cul-de-sacs. A bypass carries through traffic around the town centre.
