Te mapa
Cranendonck is a municipality made up of several villages, including Budel, Maarheeze, Soerendonk and Gastel. On a map it looks like a cluster of small settlements in open country. Each village has its own compact centre with streets branching out from it. Between them are farm plots, patches of forest and the open heathland typical of this part of North Brabant.
The municipality takes its name from the ruins of Cranendonck Castle near Soerendonk. To the south, the border with Belgium runs through quiet land. Budel-Dorplein grew up around a zinc works in the nineteenth century, and its orderly company-village streets are unlike the older village cores. Nature reserves along the border add large areas of empty green space.
A Cranendonck map poster puts that scattered pattern on paper: village centres like knots, country roads linking them, and wide blank areas where heath and woodland cover the ground. Railway and motorway lines cut across diagonally toward Eindhoven and Weert. The result is a map that is sparse and balanced, fitting for a place made of several communities rather than one.
Budel, Maarheeze, Soerendonk and Gastel each appear as a small, dense knot of streets. Country roads connect them across the open ground between.
A settlement that grew up around the zinc works. Its streets are laid out in a more regular pattern than the older Brabant villages nearby, and this is easy to see from above.
Toward Belgium, heath, forest and fens leave large areas of the map almost empty. The quiet space shows how much of the municipality is still open land.

This is a map for people from Budel, Maarheeze or one of the smaller villages. It shows the whole municipality together, the way locals know it from cycling and driving between the villages rather than from any single centre.
Change the title to the village you care about, add a subtitle or date, and choose from Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The coordinates line can be edited too.
