Te mapa
Dagenham lies in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, on the eastern edge of the capital. From above most of it is taken up by the Becontree estate, built in the 1920s and 1930s. Its curving streets, crescents and small greens make a uniform pattern that covers much of the district.
In the south, by the Thames, the Ford motor works made Dagenham an industrial name known far beyond London. In 1968 the women sewing machinists at the plant went on strike over pay, and their action helped lead to the Equal Pay Act of 1970. Becontree itself was one of the largest public housing projects in the world when it was built.
A Dagenham map poster shows these layers clearly. To the north the estate's garden-suburb streets repeat in gentle curves and loops. Main roads, the District line and the A13 cut across them, and in the south the industrial land and marshes open onto the wide sweep of the Thames.
Thousands of terraced homes line curving streets and crescents across the district. They form a tight, repeating pattern that is instantly recognisable from above.
On the southern edge, the former Ford works, docks and marshland lead down to the river, a broad band of water across the bottom of the map.
The major road running east from central London crosses the south of the district, separating the housing from the industrial riverside.

For families who grew up on the Becontree estate, or whose parents and grandparents worked at Ford, this map is local history on a sheet of paper. The estate's curving streets make a surprisingly elegant print.
You can personalise the title, the subtitle and the coordinates line, for example with your road name or the year the family moved in. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
