Te mapa
The Dalmatian Coast makes up most of Croatia's Adriatic shoreline, from around Zadar in the north to Dubrovnik in the south. Its shape is so distinctive that geographers use the term Dalmatian coast for this kind of landscape: ridges running parallel to the shore have partly sunk beneath the sea, leaving long, narrow islands separated by channels.
Split grew up inside the walls of the palace built for the Roman emperor Diocletian around the year 300, and its old town still follows the palace outline. Dubrovnik, once the Republic of Ragusa, is surrounded by complete medieval walls. Inland, the Dinaric Alps rise close behind the coast, and the Biokovo range stands directly above Makarska.
A Dalmatian Coast map poster turns this into a composition of parallel strokes: the mainland edge, the channel, and then the islands of Brač, Hvar and Korčula lying one behind another. Old towns appear as dense cores on peninsulas and in bays, and the Pelješac peninsula stretches south and west like one more island still attached to the land.
Brač, Hvar, Korčula and their neighbours lie in line with the mainland, separated from it by narrow channels, drawing a series of long shapes across the sea.
In Split the old town fills a nearly rectangular Roman enclosure on the waterfront, and its grid is still visible among the later medieval lanes.
The walled city sits on a small promontory at the southern end, a compact enclosure of streets with the Stradun running straight through the middle.
