Dārān lies in the west of Isfahan province, in the Zagros mountains, and is the administrative centre of Faridan County. The town sits in a high valley at considerable altitude, and from above its streets fill the valley floor while the surrounding mountains remain largely empty.
The area is known for its cold winters and cooler summers compared with the plains around Isfahan, and for farming and orchards that make use of the valley land. The Faridan region is also culturally varied, with communities of different backgrounds living in neighbouring towns and villages.
