Te mapa
Daura lies in Katsina State in the far north of Nigeria, near the border with Niger. From above, the old city is a dense mosaic of walled compounds. They are separated by narrow, winding lanes that open onto small squares. The emir's palace and the central mosque anchor the core, and newer, more regular neighbourhoods extend along the main roads leading out.
Daura holds a special place in Hausa history. It is regarded as one of the original seven Hausa states. According to tradition, Bayajidda killed a serpent at the Kusugu well here and then married the queen of Daura. The well is still an important landmark and a place visitors come to see.
A Daura map poster shows the fine grain of a Sahelian city: courtyards and compound walls packed tightly together, streets that follow old paths, and the open savanna beyond. It is a drawing with real historical weight, even at the scale of a small town.

The emir's palace and the central mosque form the traditional centre of Daura. The old streets converge on this area.
The historic well from the Bayajidda legend lies within the town. It is small on the map but central to Daura's place in Hausa tradition.
