Te mapa
Davis sits on the level floor of the Sacramento Valley, west of Sacramento, and its map reflects that flatness. Streets form a regular lettered and numbered grid in the older core, with curving subdivisions around it, and the whole town is threaded by an extensive network of bike paths and greenbelts that appear as fine separate lines between the roads.
The University of California, Davis occupies a very large campus on the south-western side of town, including open agricultural fields used for research. The UC Davis Arboretum follows a former channel of Putah Creek along the campus, a long winding green strip, while Interstate 80 skirts the south of town and the railway runs past the historic depot downtown.
Davis is widely known for cycling, and a high-wheel bicycle appears on the city's logo, a nod to its long commitment to bike lanes. A Davis map poster shows that character well, since the dedicated paths and greenbelts create a denser, more intricate pattern than the street grid alone could ever produce.
The older blocks around downtown form a tidy lettered and numbered grid, a clear orthogonal centre set against the curving neighbourhoods further out.
The Arboretum follows an old creek channel along the campus, a long curving green line that softens the geometry of the south side of the map.
Separated paths and greenbelts weave between houses and parks, adding a fine secondary network that makes the Davis map unusually detailed.
