Te mapa
Dera Ismail Khan sits on the western bank of the Indus in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. On the map the river and its broad floodplain run along the east side of the city, with channels and sandbanks that shift from season to season. The urban area is compact, built around an older core with newer districts and cantonment roads spreading out onto the flat plain.
The city was founded in the fifteenth century and is named after Ismail Khan, a Baloch chief. Because of its position it has long been a meeting point for routes linking Punjab, Balochistan and the tribal districts to the west. A road bridge across the Indus connects it with the Punjab side. The city is also known for its dates and for Saraiki and Pashto spoken side by side.
A Dera Ismail Khan map poster shows the dense grid of the old town next to the more open layout of the cantonment and newer housing. Main roads leave the city in several directions, and to the east the river's many channels turn the page into a wide, shifting pattern of water and land.
East of the city the Indus spreads into several channels and sandbanks. On the map it becomes a wide band of braided water next to the urban area.
The oldest part of the city is a tight grid of narrow streets and bazaars. It reads as the darkest and most detailed patch of the map.
Highways leave the city toward Punjab, Balochistan and the western hills, drawing long lines across the plain that show its role as a regional junction.

A map of Dera Ismail Khan suits people from the city now living elsewhere, and anyone connected to its cantonment or colleges. The river setting gives it an unusual, open composition.
