Mianwali sits in north-western Punjab, close to where the Indus River leaves the hills and spreads onto the plain. The river runs west of the city in a wide braided course. The Salt Range rises to the north and the sandy Thal desert opens to the south, so the city fills the space between very different landscapes.
The built-up area has a dense core of bazaars and residential blocks, with roads and canals extending toward the surrounding farmland. Irrigation from barrages on the Indus, including Jinnah Barrage upstream near Kalabagh, has shaped the green belt around the city.
