Peshawar lies in a fertile valley at the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, and its map reflects many centuries as a crossroads. The old walled city forms a dense core of narrow lanes, alleys and bazaars, where streets bend and branch without any overall plan. The Bala Hisar fort rises on raised ground at its north-western corner.
South and west of the old city, the British-era cantonment introduced wider roads, larger plots and tree-lined avenues. Beyond it, University Town and Hayatabad continue the city toward the hills along the Afghan border, with Hayatabad laid out in orderly planned sectors. The Grand Trunk Road runs through, linking Peshawar eastward toward Lahore.
Peshawar is often described as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in South Asia, and the Qissa Khwani Bazaar, the Storytellers' Bazaar, recalls the caravans that once stopped here.
