Dera Mandi is at the far southern edge of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, close to the border with Haryana. This is some of the least urban land in Delhi, where the Aravalli ridge breaks through as rocky, scrub-covered high ground rather than housing.
The map is very different from central Delhi. The village core is a small tangle of lanes, and around it the land is divided into larger plots, many of them farmhouses, reached by narrow access roads. Open, wooded ridge land appears as large empty areas between them.
The area lies near the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the protected Aravalli landscape south of the city. A Dera Mandi map poster shows the capital's quieter southern edge, where roads thin out and the ridge takes over.
