Dhone lies in the Rayalaseema region of western Andhra Pradesh, a dry upland of scrub, rocky hills and farmland. The town grew around its railway junction, and on the map the rail lines are the dominant feature, meeting near the centre and heading out in different directions across the plateau.
The streets fill the space between the railway lines and the main roads. Older lanes cluster close to the centre, and newer housing spreads out along the highways. Beyond the town, bare rocky hills and seasonal streams mark the terrain, and reservoirs and tanks appear as small patches of water.
