Te mapa
Dinguiraye is a town in the Faranah Region of Guinea, in the savanna country of Upper Guinea to the east of the Fouta Djallon highlands. It is a modest town in size, and its map shows a loose pattern of streets and compounds spreading out over open ground, with roads leading away across the surrounding countryside.
Its history is significant for West Africa. In the mid-nineteenth century, El Hadj Umar Tall, the Tijani scholar and military leader, established his base at Dinguiraye before launching the campaigns that created a large state across the upper Niger region. The town's great mosque, with its tall conical roof, is closely associated with that period.
From above, the centre is where the streets gather most tightly, around the older quarter and the mosque, while compounds become more spaced toward the edges. A Dinguiraye map poster captures a place whose small scale on paper contrasts with the large role it played in the region's past.
The older quarter around the mosque forms the densest part of the map, with lanes and compounds packed closely together at its heart.
Beyond the centre, family compounds spread out with open space between them, giving the print a light, dotted texture.
Several roads leave the town across open country toward neighbouring towns, long lines that frame the settlement within its wider landscape.
