Te mapa
Donaueschingen lies on the eastern edge of the Black Forest, in Baden-Württemberg. It is known as the place where the Danube begins: the Brigach and the Breg join just below the town to form the river that flows on across Europe to the Black Sea. On a map, both streams are visible, converging in a wide, open landscape.
The town grew as the seat of the princes of Fürstenberg, and their palace and its large park, with the Donauquelle spring basin nearby, take up a significant part of the centre. Donaueschingen is also known far beyond Germany for the Donaueschinger Musiktage, one of the oldest festivals of contemporary music.
A Donaueschingen map poster shows the town and its rivers together. The curving Brigach and Breg, the green space of the palace park and the town streets around them make a composition that is both clear and meaningful, especially for anyone who has followed the Danube downstream.
Two small rivers wind towards each other and meet just east of the centre, the conventional starting point of the Danube.
The Fürstenberg palace grounds form a large green area in the town centre, with paths and water features inside.
The spring basin traditionally called the source of the Danube sits beside the palace, a small but famous point on the map.
