Te mapa
Drohobych lies in the foothills of the Carpathians in western Ukraine, and its map centres on a market square from which streets spread out in every direction. The old town keeps its compact medieval pattern, with the square, the churches and the lanes around them forming the densest part of the plan. Beyond it, newer districts extend across rolling ground.
Salt shaped the town for centuries. Brine springs here were used to produce salt from the Middle Ages, and the saltworks are among the oldest still associated with the town. Later, the nearby oil fields around Boryslav brought a new industrial wave in the late nineteenth century, and the town grew accordingly.
Drohobych is also known as the home of the writer and artist Bruno Schulz, whose stories were drawn from its streets. The wooden Church of St George is part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of Carpathian wooden churches. A Drohobych map poster shows a town layered by salt, oil and memory, with its square still at the centre.
The central square anchors the map, with the old town's streets radiating out from it, the clearest trace of Drohobych's medieval origins.
The wooden church, part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing, stands within the town and marks one of the finest examples of Carpathian wooden architecture.
The historic saltworks, where brine was processed for centuries, sit within the urban fabric as a reminder of the trade that first made Drohobych important.
