Dugi otok means long island, and the map makes the name obvious. It stretches for tens of kilometres along the outer edge of the Zadar archipelago and is narrow along almost its whole length. The western side faces the open Adriatic and in places rises into high cliffs. The eastern side is lower, and the villages sit in small bays there, joined by a road that runs the length of the island.
At its southern end the island breaks into Telašćica, a deep, branching bay protected as a nature park, with a saltwater lake between the bay and the cliffs. In the far north, the Veli Rat lighthouse stands on a low point. Sali, in the south, is the largest village and the island's main harbour.
A Dugi otok map poster stretches from end to end, a single strip of land between the open sea and the islands of the archipelago. Along the sheltered side, small harbours and coves are strung like beads. The detailed bays at both ends mark its limits. It suits a long, narrow composition.
The southern end of the island opens into a deep, branching bay with many coves and islets. It is the most intricate stretch of coastline on the island.
The outer coast rises into steep cliffs facing the open Adriatic. On the map this side is a firm, almost straight line.
A lighthouse stands on a low headland at the northern tip. The coast there curls into small bays and channels.
