Te mapa
Dumai lies on the east coast of Sumatra in Riau province, facing the Strait of Malacca across the narrow Rupat Strait. The island of Rupat sits directly offshore, so from above the city looks out not onto open sea but onto a sheltered channel, with the coastline running in a long, gently curving line.
Industry dominates the waterfront. A large oil refinery and extensive port facilities occupy much of the shore, with tank farms, loading piers and access roads drawn as crisp geometric shapes. Dumai is one of Indonesia's main export ports for palm oil, and storage terminals for the trade line the harbour area.
Behind the coast, the town's residential and commercial districts spread inland along a few main roads, with smaller streets branching into lower, wetter ground and oil palm plantations beyond. A Dumai map poster shows a working coastal city, where the relationship between land, channel and industry is legible at a glance.
A narrow channel separates the city from Rupat Island, giving the map two parallel coastlines and a calm band of water through the middle of the frame.
Tank farms, jetties and industrial sites occupy long stretches of the shore, forming regular geometric shapes that stand out against the surrounding street pattern.
A few main roads lead from the port into the interior of Sumatra, and the town's growth follows them in narrow bands away from the coast.
