Te mapa
Dumfries sits in southwest Scotland, on the River Nith a short distance above where it meets the Solway Firth. From above, the river is the organising line: it curves through the town, with the older centre on the east bank and Maxwelltown on the west. Several bridges tie the two sides together, and residential streets spread outward into the surrounding farmland.
The town is closely tied to Robert Burns, who spent his last years here and is buried in St Michael's churchyard. His house is now a museum. Dumfries is also where J. M. Barrie went to school, and the gardens he played in are often linked to the origins of Peter Pan. The town's nickname, Queen of the South, is shared by its football club.
A Dumfries map poster shows the Nith running through the heart of the town, the bridges crossing it and the tighter streets of the old centre giving way to later suburbs. The river's curve gives the print a natural focal point, and the town's modest scale keeps the composition clear.
The Nith curves through the middle of the town, splitting it into two banks and giving the map a strong, flowing central line.
Several crossings link the town centre with Maxwelltown, among them the medieval Devorgilla Bridge, one of the oldest in Scotland.
On the east bank, the historic town centre forms a compact network of streets around the High Street, denser than the suburbs that surround it.
