Te mapa
Dunhuang is an oasis town in the far west of Gansu, and its map makes the geography unusually clear. A compact grid of streets and a band of irrigated fields sit along the Dang River. Around them lies emptiness: gravel plains to the north and the towering Mingsha Shan dunes to the south, which come almost to the edge of town.
For centuries Dunhuang was a key stop on the Silk Road, where caravan routes divided to pass north or south of the Taklamakan Desert. Its best-known site is the Mogao Caves, a cliff of Buddhist cave temples with murals and sculptures spanning roughly a thousand years. Just south of the city, Crescent Lake is a small spring-fed pool cupped among the dunes.
A Dunhuang map poster shows how sharply cultivated land gives way to desert. There are dense lines where people live and farm, and blank space where the sand begins. It is a striking composition in black and white, and a fitting reminder of a trip along the old Silk Road.
The city centre is a regular pattern of wide streets, surrounded by irrigated fields that form a clearly bounded green island in the desert.
South of town the street network simply ends where the Singing Sand Mountains begin, leaving a wide, quiet area of open space on the poster.
The river that makes the oasis possible runs through the settled area, a thin line that explains the whole shape of the town.

Koteā ko Dunhuang
Dunhuang draws travellers who remember it long after they leave: the dunes at sunset, the cave temples, the sense of standing at a crossroads of old trade routes. A map on the wall holds that memory in a restrained, graphic form.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with the date of your journey. Then choose from five styles. Sand is a natural fit here, alongside Classic black & white, Noir, Paper and Blueprint.
