Te mapa
Jiuquan lies in western Gansu, in the Hexi Corridor, the long strip of oases between the Qilian Mountains to the south and the Gobi to the north that carried the Silk Road westward. From above, the city is a compact, regular grid set in irrigated land, and beyond its fields the landscape turns quickly to open desert.
At the centre stands a drum tower, with streets running out from it in four directions, a classic arrangement for an old Chinese walled town. The city's name means wine spring, from a legend that the Han general Huo Qubing poured wine given by the emperor into a spring so his whole army could share it. The spring and its park still survive.
Jiuquan also lends its name to the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, China's first space launch site, which lies far to the north-east in the desert. The neighbouring city of Jiayuguan, at the western end of the Ming Great Wall, is close by. A Jiuquan map poster shows the clarity of an oasis town: a straight grid, a central tower, and wide space all around.
The old drum tower at the centre marks the crossing of the main streets, the point from which the city's regular plan extends in four directions.
The park around the spring that gave Jiuquan its name forms a green area in the city, tied to the story of Huo Qubing and his troops.
Irrigated fields and tree lines surround the built-up area, and beyond them the map opens into desert, making the edge of the city unusually clear and graphic.

Koteā ko Jiuquan
Jiuquan appeals to people from the Hexi Corridor, to travellers following the Silk Road through Gansu, and to anyone with a connection to China's space programme. Its clean plan and open surroundings make a particularly strong minimalist poster.
