Neighbourhood units
Each planned neighbourhood forms its own cluster of curving streets and cul-de-sacs. On the map, these clusters give the town a cellular, patchwork structure.

Te mapa
East Kilbride lies in South Lanarkshire, south of Glasgow, and it was designated in 1947 as the first of Scotland's post-war new towns. A small village was expanded into a planned town to relieve overcrowding in Glasgow, and today it is one of the largest towns in Scotland. That planning origin is written clearly into its map.
The town was designed as a series of self-contained neighbourhoods, each with its own housing, schools and local shops, arranged around a central shopping area. Curving residential roads and cul-de-sacs fill each neighbourhood, and a network of distributor roads connects them. The many roundabouts along these roads earned the town the nickname Polo Mint City.
An East Kilbride map poster shows this structure in detail. The neighbourhoods appear as distinct clusters of looping streets, divided by green belts and main roads, with the roundabouts marking the joints between them. The old village survives as a small, irregular core within the planned layout, a contrast that gives the map an interesting story.
Each planned neighbourhood forms its own cluster of curving streets and cul-de-sacs. On the map, these clusters give the town a cellular, patchwork structure.
Circular junctions punctuate the main roads throughout the town. They appear as small rings on the poster and are the source of its Polo Mint City nickname.
The central shopping district sits between the neighbourhoods, with the original village nearby. Its denser, larger blocks mark the heart of the plan.
