El Escorial sits at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama, northwest of Madrid. Its streets spread over gently sloping ground below the neighbouring town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, home of the famous royal monastery. The Madrid–Ávila railway runs through the lower town, and its station has long been the arrival point for visitors heading up the hill.
The landscape was shaped by royal patronage. Woods and hunting grounds once reserved for the crown still cover much of the land around the two towns. Within El Escorial's own municipality stands the Casita del Príncipe, an eighteenth-century pavilion set in formal gardens. The mountains above give the whole area a clear sense of direction.
An El Escorial map poster shows the town between plain and sierra. The railway and main roads form strong lines, residential streets fill in the lower slopes, and the wooded land marks a quiet boundary with the monastery town above.

The Madrid–Ávila line crosses the lower town. The station area is a clear anchor from which roads lead uphill towards San Lorenzo.
This royal pavilion and its geometric gardens stand in El Escorial itself. On the map they form a small, formal pattern among the surrounding woodland.
