Te mapa
Espoo lies west of Helsinki and is Finland's second-largest city. On a map it looks unlike most cities: instead of a single centre, it has several separate hubs connected by roads and rail, with forests, lakes and coastline filling the spaces between.
Along the southern edge, the Gulf of Finland creates a complex coastline of bays, islands and peninsulas. Inland, lakes and forests dominate the landscape, including the Nuuksio National Park in the north. The Otaniemi campus of Aalto University, designed in part by Alvar Aalto, sits near the coast, while Tapiola is known as a planned garden city from the 1950s.
An Espoo map poster shows this pattern of scattered centres and green space. It is a map of a city where nature and urban life are closely intertwined, with water and forest never far from any home.
The southern coastline breaks into bays and islands, creating a detailed, irregular edge along the Gulf of Finland.
The university campus near the coast is a distinct area of buildings and green space, linked to Helsinki by rail.
Large forested areas and lakes in the north form a natural boundary to the city's development.
