Te mapa
Lake Ülemiste lies on the southern edge of Tallinn and is the city's main source of drinking water. On a map it appears as a broad, rounded shape set just above the older parts of the capital, with Tallinn Airport running along its eastern side and the city's railway and road network wrapping around its northern shore.
Because it is a protected reservoir, the shoreline has little development, so the lake stands out as a clear open space among urban lines. It features in Estonian folklore through the Old Man of Ülemiste, who is said to ask whether Tallinn is finished yet. If the answer is ever yes, he will flood the city.
A Lake Ülemiste map poster frames the lake as part of Tallinn rather than apart from it. The airport runway, the Ülemiste district and the lines of rail converge nearby, giving the composition a strong urban context around a smooth, uncluttered body of water.
Tallinn Airport runs along the lake's eastern side, its runway drawing a strong straight line beside the curved shoreline.
As a drinking water reservoir, the shore is largely undeveloped, leaving the lake as a clean open space among the city's streets and rail lines.
Railway lines and main roads curve around the northern side of the lake, linking it to central Tallinn and the Ülemiste district.
