Te mapa
Fāraskūr lies in Damietta Governorate in the north-east of the Nile Delta, close to the Damietta branch of the Nile. On a map the river runs along one side of the town, and the dense streets of the centre are surrounded by a fine web of canals and field boundaries.
The delta here is one of the most intensively farmed landscapes in Egypt, and the irrigation channels form a detailed pattern that fills the space between towns and villages. Fāraskūr is also known for the battle of 1250, during the Seventh Crusade, when the forces of Louis IX of France were defeated nearby and the king was captured.
A Fāraskūr map poster shows the delta at close range: the curve of the Nile, the compact town and the dense texture of canals and fields around it, a landscape shaped by water for thousands of years.
The eastern branch of the Nile flows past Fāraskūr towards Damietta and the Mediterranean, forming the dominant natural line on the map.
A dense network of irrigation canals crosses the surrounding farmland, creating the fine, detailed pattern typical of the Nile Delta seen from above.
Fāraskūr gave its name to the battle of 1250, when the crusader army of Louis IX was defeated in the delta and the French king was taken prisoner.
