Fengyi lies within Dali City in western Yunnan, east of Xiaguan, close to where Erhai Lake drains southwards out of the Dali basin. The map is shaped by relief. Flat land along the valley floor holds the roads and settlements, while steep, deeply folded mountains rise on either side. The town's streets follow the valley, and field terraces and villages step up the lower slopes.
The Dali region is home to the Bai people and is known for Erhai Lake, the Cangshan range and the old walled town of Dali to the north. Fengyi belongs to this landscape. It serves as a local centre on the routes that link the Dali basin with eastern Yunnan, and it is surrounded by farmland and orchards on the valley floor.
