Te mapa
Fort Portal lies in western Uganda, at the foot of the Rwenzori Mountains, whose peaks rise to the west along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. From above, the city spreads over rolling hills, its streets curving around slopes and valleys. The Mpanga River runs through the area, and green tea estates and fields surround the urban core.
The city is the seat of the Tooro Kingdom, and the royal palace stands on a hill overlooking the town. It takes its name from a British fort named after Sir Gerald Portal, a nineteenth-century diplomat. Fort Portal is also a gateway to the crater lakes to the south and to Kibale National Park, known for its chimpanzees.
A Fort Portal map poster shows a city shaped by terrain: hillside roads, a denser centre, and open land that hints at the tea plantations beyond. The irregular streets and natural lines make a lively, textured composition for those who know western Uganda or have travelled through its highlands.
The Tooro Kingdom's palace stands on a hill above the city, a prominent landmark that anchors the surrounding streets.
Roads in Fort Portal follow curving slopes rather than a grid, giving the map a flowing pattern of streets that bend around hills and valleys.
South of the city lies a landscape of volcanic crater lakes, and roads leading from Fort Portal hint at this route toward the lakes and Kibale National Park.
