Te mapa
Fort William stretches along the eastern shore of Loch Linnhe, near where the sea loch turns and meets Loch Eil. On a map the town is long and narrow, squeezed between the water and steep ground rising toward Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles. The River Nevis and the River Lochy cut down to the shore on either side.
The town calls itself the Outdoor Capital of the UK. It is the northern end of the West Highland Way and the base for walkers heading up the Ben. Just to the north at Banavie, Neptune's Staircase lifts the Caledonian Canal through a flight of eight locks. The West Highland Line runs through town, and the Jacobite steam train leaves here for Mallaig.
A Fort William map poster sets out that meeting of water and mountain. The shoreline makes a strong curve, the streets run in a thin band along it, and the canal, rivers and railway add clear lines to the north. With the loch filling one side of the frame, the design is spacious and unmistakably Highland.
The town follows the edge of the sea loch in a long, slender strip, so the shoreline becomes the defining curve of the whole composition.
At Banavie, a flight of eight locks carries the Caledonian Canal uphill from Corpach. It appears as a straight, deliberate line against the natural shapes around it.
Two rivers come down from the high ground to meet the loch on either side of town. Their winding courses frame the settlement between them.
