Te mapa
Foumban lies on a plateau in Cameroon's West Region, surrounded by rolling highland countryside. From above, the town is centred on the royal palace and its grounds, with roads converging on it from several directions and neighbourhoods spreading out across gentle slopes. The street pattern is irregular, following the land rather than a grid, and thins into farmland at the edges.
Foumban is the historic capital of the Bamum kingdom. The palace was built in the early twentieth century under Sultan Ibrahim Njoya, who also created the Bamum script, one of the few writing systems invented in Africa. The town is known for its craftsmen, particularly bronze casters and wood carvers, whose workshops have made Foumban a centre of Cameroonian art.
A Foumban map poster shows a town organised around a single royal centre, with the palace grounds as a clear open space and streets radiating outward. It is a map with a strong sense of focus, and it suits anyone connected to the Bamum people, the town or its artistic traditions.
The palace of the Bamum sultans and its grounds sit at the heart of the town. On the poster they appear as an open space with roads converging on it.
Foumban stands on the western plateau, and the streets bend with the rolling terrain instead of following straight lines.
The town's crafts tradition is concentrated in workshops near the centre, part of the dense cluster of streets around the royal compound.
