Te mapa
Lake Nyos is a small crater lake in the northwest of Cameroon, set on the flank of an inactive volcano in the Oku volcanic field. From above it is compact and rounded, enclosed by steep walls, with a natural spillway at its northern end. The surrounding hills are rural and lightly marked, with few roads.
The lake is known for a tragic event in 1986, when a large cloud of carbon dioxide was released from its depths and flowed into the valleys below, killing around 1,700 people and thousands of animals. Since then, degassing pipes have been installed to release gas gradually and reduce the risk of another eruption.
A Lake Nyos map poster is a quieter, more reflective piece than most lake maps. Its shape is simple and small, surrounded by high ground and river valleys that lead away from the crater. It suits people with ties to the region, and anyone interested in volcanic landscapes and the science of limnic eruptions.
The lake fills a volcanic crater, giving it a compact, rounded outline with steep sides that define its edge sharply on the map.
A low point in the crater rim at the northern end lets water flow out into the valley below, a small break in an otherwise closed shape.
Valleys descend from the crater into the surrounding hills, drawing the thin lines of streams and tracks away from the lake.
