Te mapa
Calabar sits on a stretch of higher ground between the Calabar River to the west and the Great Kwa River to the east, not far from where they reach the Cross River estuary. That setting gives the map its shape. The city runs long from north to south, with water, mangrove and creeks on either side and the main roads following the spine of the land.
The older quarters lie near the Calabar River waterfront, where the port and the marina first gave the city its importance. Further inland the pattern opens up into planned residential areas and wider avenues. On a monochrome print, the dense riverside streets, the broad water and the empty wetland edges stand in especially clear contrast.
For centuries Calabar was one of the most important ports on the Bight of Biafra. Today it is the capital of Cross River State, known for its December carnival and for the colonial-era Old Residency, now a museum. A Calabar map poster keeps the city's water-bound form in view, and that form defines Calabar more than any single building.
The Calabar River and the Great Kwa River flank the city on the west and east. They press the built-up area into a long strip of land between them.
Near the old centre, the waterfront along the Calabar River holds the port and the marina. This is the historic heart of the city and the point where its streets meet the water.
Creeks and mangrove along the rivers leave the edges of the map largely open. They frame the network of roads with broad blank spaces of water and swamp.

Koteā ko Calabar
Calabar is a city many people carry with them, whether they grew up there, studied at the university or came for the carnival season. A map of its river-bound streets is a quiet, specific reminder rather than a generic souvenir.
