Frauenfeld is the capital of the canton of Thurgau in north-eastern Switzerland, set on the small Murg river just before it reaches the Thur. From above, the compact old town sits on a low rise above the Murg, with Schloss Frauenfeld, its medieval castle, marking the corner. Newer districts spread out from there in every direction across gently rolling land.
The rail line and the motorway to Zurich and Lake Constance pass the town as long, straight bands. To the west lies the Grosse Allmend, a large open plain used as a military training ground and, each summer, for Openair Frauenfeld, one of Europe's largest hip-hop festivals.
