Fürth sits directly beside Nuremberg in Middle Franconia, yet it has kept a distinct identity and a street plan of its own. The old town rises on a ridge above the confluence of the Rednitz and Pegnitz, which meet just north of the centre to form the Regnitz. Their broad green valleys, known locally as Wiesengrund, wrap around the city on two sides.
In 1835 the first German railway line opened between Nuremberg and Fürth. The city is also known for its unusually high number of listed buildings, since much of its historic fabric survived the Second World War. Henry Kissinger was born here, and the town hall tower, modelled on the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, rises above the centre.
A Fürth map poster shows a dense historic core held between two river valleys, with the planned nineteenth-century streets to the south joining the Nuremberg grid. The open floodplains stand out as wide empty bands. Across them the city's bridges and the old railway route draw firm connecting lines.
The Rednitz and Pegnitz meet north of the old town to form the Regnitz, their green floodplains bracketing the city in a clear Y shape.
Winding lanes and small squares around the old town form a dense cluster on higher ground, largely unchanged in its layout for centuries.
The line of Germany's first railway, opened in 1835, runs toward Nuremberg along the corridor that still links the two cities.

Koteā ko Fürth
Fürth has a strong local identity, and residents often prefer that it be seen on its own terms rather than as a suburb of its neighbour. A map of its rivers and old town makes a fitting gift for a new home or a family with roots here.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper pairs well with the historic character of the old town.
