Galdakao lies in Biscay, just upriver from Bilbao, in the valley of the Ibaizabal. The river curves through the lower part of the municipality, and the town's streets follow the valley floor before climbing onto the slopes on either side, where houses and small neighbourhoods give way to meadows and woodland.
The valley has long carried roads and a railway between Bilbao and the interior, and industry developed along it. Galdakao is also home to a major regional hospital. Above the town, the steep green hills that define so much of the Basque Country close in, with farmsteads scattered across them.
