Gallatin Map Poster & Print
Gallatin, the seat of Sumner County, lies northeast of Nashville in the rolling country of Middle Tennessee. It is named after Albert Gallatin, the long-serving Treasury Secretary under Jefferson and Madison. The historic centre is a compact grid around the courthouse square, and main roads leave it in several directions toward Nashville and neighbouring communities.
To the south, the Cumberland River has been dammed to form Old Hickory Lake, and its long inlets and coves bring water deep into the landscape. This creates the most striking element on the map: irregular shorelines, with peninsulas of residential streets and marinas pushing into the lake. It looks very different from the right angles of downtown.
Between the square and the water, newer subdivisions fill the land with curving streets and cul-de-sacs, alongside parks and older highways. Old Hickory Lake
The dammed Cumberland River spreads along the south side of town in branching inlets and coves. It gives the map an irregular waterline full of small peninsulas.
Radiating highways
Roads from Nashville, Hendersonville and nearby towns converge on the centre. Their long lines give structure to the growing suburbs between them.
