Te mapa
Gediz lies in the mountainous west of Anatolia, in the province of Kütahya, not far from the slopes of Murat Dağı. The Gediz River, one of the main rivers of the Aegean region, rises in the mountains nearby and flows west to the sea near İzmir. The town is the administrative centre of a largely rural district of farms and hills.
In March 1970 a strong earthquake devastated the town, destroying much of the old settlement and killing more than a thousand people. Gediz was afterward rebuilt at a new location a short distance from the original site, with a planned layout that differs markedly from the organic pattern of older Anatolian towns.
That history is readable on a Gediz map poster. The rebuilt town shows a regular arrangement of streets and blocks, while the older settlement and surrounding villages follow the land in less ordered lines. Around it, the valleys and hills of the Kütahya uplands give the composition a sense of rough, open terrain.
After the 1970 earthquake the town was re-established on a new site, and its planned streets give the map a more orderly structure than most towns of the region.
The area of the original settlement lies close by, where the street pattern is older and more irregular, a visible record of the town before the disaster.
Hills and valleys around the town mark the upper course of the Gediz River, which begins its long route to the Aegean in the mountains nearby.

Koteā ko Gediz
Gediz is known across Turkey for how it rebuilt after 1970. For families from the town, a map of its streets marks both the place they know today and the one their parents and grandparents remember, held together in one image.
