Gennep sits in the north of Dutch Limburg, where the small Niers river flows into the Maas. Water shapes the whole map. The Niers winds in tight loops through the lowlands before its mouth, and the Maas curves broadly past the town, bordered by meadows that can flood in high water.
The old center is compact, a small cluster of streets around the market and town hall, with newer neighborhoods spreading south and east. Near the confluence are the remains of the Genneperhuis, a medieval castle that once guarded the river crossing. A Gennep map poster links the town to these rivers and their history.
The German border is only a few kilometers away, and the landscape continues into the woods and heaths of the Lower Rhine. On the print, the density of the town contrasts well with the flowing lines of water and floodplain.
