Te mapa
George Town occupies the northeastern tip of Penang Island, facing the Malaysian mainland across a narrow strait. On a map the historic core forms a dense grid of shophouse streets against the sea, with the coastline wrapping around it on two sides. Behind the city the island rises into forested hills, including Penang Hill, and suburbs spread along the coast.
Founded in 1786 as a British trading post by Francis Light, the city grew into a busy port with Chinese, Indian, Malay and European communities. Its historic centre was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, together with Melaka. Fort Cornwallis stands near the tip of the cape, and the clan jetties extend over the water on wooden piles.
A George Town map poster shows the fine grid of the old port, the jetties reaching into the strait and the long shoreline curving south toward the Penang Bridge. The contrast between the closely built centre and the open water gives the design a strong outline, and the island setting makes the composition instantly recognisable.
The UNESCO-listed core forms a tight network of narrow streets lined with shophouses, laid out close to the waterfront on the island's northeastern cape.
Along the southeastern waterfront, rows of wooden houses built on piles extend into the strait, drawing short parallel lines out from the shore.
The star-shaped outline of the old fort sits near the tip of the cape beside the Esplanade, marking the site where the settlement began.
