Sungai Petani lies in southern Kedah, on the flat coastal plain between the foothills of Gunung Jerai to the north and the Muda River to the south. The old town is small and compact, with a grid of shophouse streets. From above, it is surrounded by a wide ring of newer housing estates laid out in curving loops and cul-de-sacs.
The best-known landmark in the centre is the clock tower, built in 1936 to mark the silver jubilee of King George V. A short distance away, the Bujang Valley holds the remains of ancient temples and trading settlements, among the oldest archaeological sites in Malaysia. Gunung Jerai is the main landmark on the horizon.
