Te mapa
Gernika-Lumo sits in a green valley in Bizkaia, where the Oka river starts to widen into the Urdaibai estuary on its way to the Bay of Biscay. On a map the town is a tight, irregular core with hills close on either side. The river and the flat valley floor give the plan a clear north–south direction.
The town is known around the world for two reasons. The Tree of Gernika, next to the Assembly House, has long symbolised Basque self-government. The bombing of the town in April 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, inspired Picasso's painting Guernica. Much of the centre was rebuilt afterwards, which shows in its fairly regular blocks.
A Gernika-Lumo map poster holds that history in a small, readable street plan. The valley, the start of the estuary and the green slopes surround a town whose name carries far more weight than its size suggests. In black and white the composition is sober and fitting.
The Oka runs through the valley floor beside the town and gives the map its main axis before it opens into the wide tidal flats of Urdaibai.
The Assembly House and the Tree of Gernika stand on a rise above the centre, a small green space with outsized symbolic weight in Basque political life.
After 1937 the centre was largely reconstructed, so the core has a more orderly block pattern than many old Basque towns, framed by hills on both sides.
