Te mapa
Gihombo lies in Rwanda's Western Province, in the hill country near Lake Kivu. This is a landscape of steep slopes and narrow valleys, where nearly every hillside is cultivated, and the settlement pattern follows the land closely. On a map, there is no compact town centre in the usual sense, but rather houses and small clusters spread along ridges and connected by winding roads.
The main roads trace the tops of ridges and wrap around hillsides in long curves, while footpaths drop steeply into valleys and climb the opposite slopes. Churches, schools, health centres and small markets form focal points where lines converge. The result is a map that reads almost like a drawing of the terrain itself, revealing the hills through roads alone.
The Western Province is known for tea and coffee grown on high slopes and for the long shoreline of Lake Kivu. A Gihombo map poster captures a place defined less by buildings than by the land, a web of routes that shows how people move through Rwanda's steep, closely farmed countryside.
Main routes follow the crests of the hills in long, sinuous curves, the strongest lines on the map and a direct reflection of the terrain beneath them.
Narrow paths descend into the valleys and climb the far slopes, a fine network linking homesteads, fields and neighbouring hills across the whole frame.
Homes and community buildings gather at road junctions and along ridges, forming small clusters rather than a single dense centre.
