Te mapa
Uvira lies on the western shore of Lake Tanganyika, close to its northern end, in the South Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. From above, the town forms a long ribbon along the lake. The shoreline runs on one side, the steep slopes of the Mitumba Mountains rise on the other, and a main road runs between them.
The border with Burundi is close, and Bujumbura lies across the northern end of the lake. The Ruzizi River, which drains Lake Kivu into Lake Tanganyika, enters the lake to the north, and its plain forms flatter ground beyond the town. Uvira is a port and trading town, and boats link it to other shores of Tanganyika.
An Uvira map poster reduces the town to its essential geography: a thin band of streets held between a vast lake and rising hills. The composition is simple and strong, with the shoreline as its main line. It shows clearly how the land has shaped where and how people live.
The shoreline runs along the eastern edge of the town. This long, calm line separates the dense streets from the open water of one of the deepest lakes in the world.
Behind the town the ground rises steeply toward the Mitumba range. The slopes limit how far the streets can climb and give Uvira its long, narrow shape.
A main road runs parallel to the lake through the length of the town. Smaller streets branch off it toward the shore and the hills.

Koteā ko Uvira
The map means a lot to people from Uvira and South Kivu, including families living elsewhere in Congo or abroad, and to those who have worked in the region. It keeps the lake and the hills together in one quiet image.
