Te mapa
Gikongoro sits high in Rwanda’s Southern Province, where the land folds into ridge after ridge. From above, the town does not spread across a plain. It follows the high ground, with its main roads keeping to the crests and smaller tracks dropping into the valleys below. The map is full of curves, and hardly any line runs straight for long.
The town is the administrative centre of what is now called Nyamagabe District, and many Rwandans still use the older name. To the west the land climbs towards the Nyungwe Forest, one of the largest montane rainforests in the region. Around the town, the hillsides are worked in small plots, and this shows up on a detailed map as a fine web of paths.
A Gikongoro map poster shows a settlement shaped entirely by terrain. The main road winds through the centre, clusters of streets gather where the ridge widens, and thin lines trace footpaths between neighbouring hills. In black and white the pattern looks almost like a drawing of the landscape itself: the roads show where the ground is high enough, and dry enough, to build on.
The main routes through Gikongoro follow the crests of the hills. They form long, looping lines that bend with the land instead of crossing it directly.
Between the ridges, narrow paths connect homes and fields. On a detailed map they fill the lower ground with a delicate, branching texture.
The high country west of the town leads towards the Nyungwe Forest. The land there grows steeper and the built-up areas thin out.
