Te mapa
Gitarama, now officially known as Muhanga, is a town in Rwanda's Southern Province, west of Kigali on the main road toward Huye. Like much of the country it is built on hills, and on a map its streets trace ridge lines and wrap around slopes rather than forming any straight grid.
The main road through town is the clearest feature, with smaller streets branching off to follow the contours. Just outside the centre lies Kabgayi, home to one of Rwanda's oldest Catholic missions and cathedrals, whose grounds show up as a distinct cluster of paths and buildings on its own hill.
A Gitarama map poster turns that hilly terrain into a delicate network of curving lines. It fits anyone with a link to the town: people who grew up in Muhanga district, studied at Kabgayi or travelled regularly on the road between Kigali and the south.
The national road running through town is the strongest line on the map, linking Gitarama with the capital to the east and Huye to the south.
A short distance from the centre, the Kabgayi mission and cathedral occupy their own hill, forming a separate, recognisable cluster of streets and grounds.
Residential streets bend around slopes and along ridges, so the town's pattern looks organic and layered, typical of Rwanda's hill country.
